The Cemetery Groundskeeper is responsible for the care, maintenance, and overall appearance of the cemetery grounds, facilities, and sacred spaces. This role ensures that the cemetery reflects dignity, reverence, and respect for the deceased and their families in accordance with Catholic values and traditions.
Key Responsibilities
Perform general groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, edging, watering, seeding, and maintaining trees.
Prepare and maintain gravesites and mausoleums for burials, entombments, and inurnments with accuracy and respect.
Assist with the opening and closing of graves, including excavation, backfilling, and proper placement of memorial headstones.
Maintain walkways, roads, and parking areas free of debris, snow, and hazards.
Clean and maintain cemetery buildings, mausoleums, and equipment.
Install, level, and maintain headstones, markers, crypt-fronts and niche covers.
Operate and maintain a variety of groundskeeping equipment and tools safely and efficiently.
Ensure that all work is carried out with respect for Catholic burial rites, families visiting the cemetery, and the sacred nature of the grounds.
Assist families and visitors by providing directions, answering basic questions, and offering courteous support.
Report any maintenance issues, safety hazards, or vandalism promptly to the office.
Participate in special projects, seasonal preparations, and liturgical observances (e.g., Memorial Day, All Souls Day, Easter).
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Previous experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or related field is helpful but not required; training will be provided.
Physical ability to lift, carry, bend, kneel, and perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
Commitment to working respectfully within a Catholic cemetery and upholding the dignity of the sacred grounds.
Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and as part of a team.
Valid driver’s license preferred.
Work Environment
Primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
Regular exposure to dirt, dust, noise, and equipment.
Physical demands include lifting up to 75 lbs, operating machinery, and occasional manual digging.
